High school drill: As sharp as ever, Canyon View Talons capture fifth-straight 3A state championship

The Canyon View Talons have moved into some pretty elite company after their performance at the 3A drill team state championships on Friday night.

Canyon View finished first in two of three categories in a clinical state performance at UVU as it captured its fifth straight championship.

It moves into a seventh-place tie in the state record books for consecutive state titles, joining Manti, which won five straight from 2002-2006. Duchesne owns the record at 15 from 2004-2018.

“What makes this Canyon View team special is their determination, consistency, and love for each other. They’re incredible dancers, but even better teammates. They handled the pressure of chasing a five-peat with maturity, confidence and belief in each other,” said Canyon View coach Nicole Mikkelson, who has been a coach for all five state titles.

The Talons finished first in Military and Dance categories, with Morgan placing first in Show. Mikkelson said her team’s Military routine was her favorite of the season to the song “Built For this” by Vo Williams.

Morgan’s first-place Show finish helped it to a second straight runner-up finish in 3A and Manti rounded out the top three.

Canyon View team members are: Ella Askeroth, Brooklyn Baker, Ellie Barrick, Kaydence Chadburn, Brielle Christian, Kallie Clegg, Jayley Coon, Alexis Davie, Charlotte Gambles, Madison Gillies, Jayda Hathaway, Ashley Irons, Nicole Jacobsen, Gentry Jones, Brinley Ludlow, Ellie McClellan, Madison Meredith, Bentlee Mitchell, Larvri Mock, Jaquelle Morris, Reagan Reynolds, Janelle Robinson, Madeline Ruiz, Hudcyn Sanderson, Delaini Speak, Hannah Stoker, Kylee Sullivan, Reese Urie, Haylee Wright and Cecily Yorgason.

Assistant coach Mikkelson this year were Alex Staheli, Aspen Marshall, Jessica Sahagun and Jadyn Sommer.
