The wins just keep on comin’
After a hot start to SEC play, many have been waiting for the other shoe to drop for this Texas A&M basketball team. But after a 92-77 road win against Georgia on Saturday, the conference standing Cinderella dances for another day, and as the wins pile up, may be doing some dancing in March.
The Aggies shot out of the gate in this game, jumping out to a 22-2 lead less than five minutes in thanks in large part to shooting 5-of-7 from three-point range in the early going. Georgia would make a a run of their own, trimming that lead to just three points with 2:3o to play in the first half. But A&M was able to get back up 10 going into halftime. The Bulldogs would then continue to threaten, pulling within two points with 9:00 left in the game. But as was the case virtually all game, the Aggies always had an answer, getting the lead back up to double digits with 6:00 to play and then closing out a 92-77 win in which they never trailed. On the season, A&M improves to 17-4 and an astonishing 7-1 in SEC play.
The star of the game for A&M, as is becoming the norm, was Rashaun Agee. His 18 points, 15 rebounds (10 of them on offense) and 7 assists absolutely swung the outcome of this game as he continues to be a physical force inside for a team that lacks much of it other than him. The Ags also had four other players reach double figures with 15 from Marcus Hill and Ali Dibba, 13 from Ruben Dominguez and 11 from Pop Isaccs.
The win ensures the Aggies will enter the month of February in sole possession of first place in the SEC standings, something that was pretty darn inexplicable heading into year one of the Bucky McMillan era. In fact the preseason media poll had the Aggies finishing 13th.
Certainly there are still tough games ahead for A&M, in fact they have one of the most difficult remaining schedules in the country. That starts in a big way this next week as they travel to No. 23 Alabama on Feb. 4 and then host No. 19 Florida on Feb. 7. But the Georgia victory gives the Aggies their third “Quad 1” win of the season, and further bolsters what is becoming an increasingly rock solid NCAA Tournament resume. ESPN’s Joe Lunardi had the Aggies as an 8 seed, and they certainly won’t be moving down from that any time soon.
There’s a long way to go this season, but it’s safe to say that Bucky Ball has Aggies believing.
