Kubiak’s latest one-year stint as offensive coordinator is about to end with a head coaching job.
It looks like the Seattle Seahawks will be searching for an offensive coordinator for a fourth consecutive season.
Having voluntarily let go of Shane Waldron and Ryan Grubb over the past two seasons, this year’s offensive coordinator change is because of too much success to go unnoticed. Klint Kubiak is reportedly working on an agreement that will make him the next head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. The move would not be official (obviously) until after the Super Bowl.
Barring a dramatic change of heart, this will be Kubiak’s third one-and-done stint as offensive coordinator, but the previous stops with the New Orleans Saints (2024) and Minnesota Vikings (2021) ended early after his head coaches were fired. In this instance, Kubiak has coordinated one of the league’s better offenses while winning the NFC Championship in Sam Darnold’s first season as Seahawks starter. Given the lack of head coach candidates with deep offensive backgrounds, Kubiak was always going to be a serious candidate for a job.
Kubiak was previously interviewed by the Arizona Cardinals, New York Giants, Miami Dolphins, Atlanta Falcons, and Baltimore Ravens. Only the Cardinals, who also interviewed Kubiak twice, would still have a head coaching vacancy if Kubiak is the guy for Vegas.
The concern for the Seahawks is not just losing Kubiak, but his assistants like offensive line coach John Benton and run game specialist Justin Outten. We’ll find out just how far-reaching the coaching brain drain will go for Seattle in due time. Kubiak would be the first Seahawks play-caller to ever immediately leave the organization for a head coaching job elsewhere. Incidentally, the Seahawks are at the Raiders next season.
Best wishes to Klint as he replaces, of all people, Pete Carroll as Raiders head coach. How about ending this glorious single season as Seahawks OC with a Super Bowl?
