The Times’ trusted Merseyside journalist Paul Joyce reports that Everton have decided to keep Harrison Armstrong at the club for the remainder of the Premier League season. With David Moyes’ squad desperately short on numbers through injury, suspension and international commitments, the young midfielder was recalled from his loan at Championship side Preston North End when the transfer window opened.

He immediately showed that he was ready for the top flight after already making a mark on loan at Deepdale, and has featured in six games and played over 400 minutes, acquitting himself quite well in the process. While the 19-year-old still has some growing up to do in the physical aspects, Armstrong has shown the right attitude to be a valuable contributor even at this stage of his development.

Moyes had until before the Brighton draw yesterday indicated that he was going to wait until the end of the window to make his final verdict on returning the player to his loan, it appears he has made his decision. The Everton boss also said he been in touch throughout with Preston manager Paul Heckingbottom about Armstrong’s status.

The youngster has been challenged to show his versatility in those six games, lining up in advanced central and right midfield positions. Everton’s scoring paucity means he hasn’t had any goals or assists to his name, but he has contributed 0.57 key passes per 90 minutes he’s played, on par with James Tarkowski, Idrissa Gueye and Thierno Barry.

There is no doubt that Jack Grealish’s injury has played a big part in keeping Armstrong at Finch Farm. With the impending loan addition of Chelsea winger Tyrique George and possibly more new faces on deadline day tomorrow, Everton might have a squad that’s somewhat equipped for a European qualification challenge, but will need a hefty dose of good fortune and improved tactical decision-making to get there.
