Liverpool and Rennes are in advanced talks over a pre-agreement which would see Jérémy Jacquet (20) join the Reds in the summer, according to Ouest-France. Earlier reports tonight indicated that Liverpool had overtaken Chelsea in the race to sign the highly-rated France U21 international defender. However, with time now running out for Rennes to find a potential replacement for Jacquet, the latter is expected to remain in Brittany beyond Monday’s closing of the winter transfer window.

Ouest-France understands that Rennes are eyeing up a club-record sale for Jacquet, which means his departure could earn his formative side a €65m+ transfer fee. The outlet understands that, should Liverpool and Rennes agree to an immediate transfer for Jacquet, the move would include an automatic loan of Jacquet back to Rennes for the remainder of the season.

Jacquet has reportedly been convinced by Liverpool’s sporting project, although Chelsea are yet to give up on him.
