Deadline day is rarely dull at Newcastle United.

Eddie Howe side's even had to race against time to finally complete a protracted move for Yoane Wissa after requesting an extension to do so back in September.

However, it is hard to imagine such scenes on Monday.

Club captain Jamaal Lascelles could leave but, as far as incomings are concerned, Newcastle have no plans to make a late dash.

Though Newcastle have had money to spend, if needed, the early noises were that any mid-season moves would have an impact on what the club could do in the summer when there will be more options available and better value in the market.

Therefore, if the right player was not necessarily available at the right price, Newcastle were prepared to wait rather than sign someone just for the sake of it - even after a series of injuries at the back.

Newcastle looked especially light at one point earlier this month when defenders Dan Burn, Fabian Schar and Tino Livramento were all sidelined.

However, young midfielder Lewis Miley has filled in impressively at right-back and Burn put in a man-of-the-match display in Paris last week after recovering from a broken rib and punctured lung.

Burn is at his best in the heart of defence, but the England international can also provide cover at left-back and such versatility will be vital to help ease the burden on Lewis Hall.

Newcastle clearly need further depth at full-back moving forward, though, not to mention two or three strong additions in other key areas.

Saturday's 4-1 defeat at Liverpool was a reminder of that as this stretched side attempt to fight on multiple fronts.
