The Times-Union rounds up first-round playoffs in FHSAA high school girls soccer in Classes 1A-3A, including a dramatic win for Bolles.
Time to call Providence girls soccer the set-play Stallions.
Converting three corner kicks into goals within the opening seven minutes, top-seeded Providence powered to an 8-0 mercy-rule shutout of visiting Branford (9-10-5) in the Florida High School Athletic Association Region 1-2A girls soccer playoffs on Feb. 2.
Ansley Smith and Georgia Pesare scored twice each for the Stallions (12-4-2), and Katie Cunningham curled a direct corner kick into the goal five minutes in. Harper Pombier, Kendall Trimiar and Julia Palmer also found the net to set up a Feb. 9 second-round home match against Tallahassee Maclay.
Also advancing is Episcopal, which rolled 8-0 against visiting Williston (9-6-1). The Eagles (14-4), Class 2A runners-up a year ago, advance to face P.K. Yonge.
Teams in Classes 4A through 7A begin the regionals on Feb. 5.
REGION 1-3A
Senior sweeper Mia Lieb notched the only goal in the second half and nine-time FHSAA champion Bolles turned the tables on host Fernandina Beach, 1-0. Fernandina Beach (12-3-4) had beaten Bolles (9-9-4) by the same score in the district final.
Bolles advances to a Feb. 9 road game at top seed South Walton (11-4), which won 5-0 against Keystone Heights with two goals each from Lileigh Madden and Bailey Masche as well as one from Jadyn Lo Bue-Holzer. Keystone ends the year at 8-12-3.
Gateway Conference champion Wolfson saw its season end with a 2-0 loss at Florida High (15-3-1). The Wolfpack close at 12-10.
REGION 1-1A
State champion 15 times, St. Johns Country Day started its quest for a state repeat with another Victoria Sarka hat trick in an 8-0 rout of Tallahassee St. John Paul I (7-7-2). Alana Mantello scored twice and contributed four assists for the Spartans (13-3-3), who have won opening-round playoff games in 25 consecutive years. Annabelle Ernst, Sophia Miller and Adisienne Taylor rounded out the scoring.
Reagan Moyer tallied a hat trick for St. Joseph (15-5), a 5-2 victor against visiting Gainesville Oak Hall (11-5). Millie Vieczorek and Amy Bowler also scored for the Flashes, who next meet Mount Dora Christian on Feb. 9.
