Norwegian skiing great Aleksander Aamodt Kilde will not compete at the Winter Olympics starting this week in Italy and has ended the season prematurely.
"I did every I could to be ready for the Olympics but my mind and my body aren't performing as they should," Kilde said on Tuesday.
Aamodt, 33, suffered severe leg and shoulder injuries in a crash at the Wengen downhill race in January 2024. He only returned to the World Cup this season.
The comeback did not go as planned as he sat out the recent races in Wengen and Kitzbühel. He spoke back problems which were hampering him severely and contributed to his decision.
"It is extremely difficult to take this decision after investing so much work together with my family, the medical team, the national team and many others," he said.
"At the same time I am proud to have fought my way back and being able to compete in the World Cup."
Kilde, the partner of American great Mikaela Shffrin and a four-time medallist at Olympics and world championships, said he will now focus on preparing for the 2026-27 season.
