The Times-Union rounds up first-round FHSAA high school boys soccer playoffs for Jacksonville and Northeast Florida teams in Classes 1A, 2A and 3A.
Not so long ago, lacrosse was far and away the main game for Robert Adams.
But Episcopal is glad that the senior has added soccer to his varsity sports mix, after his two goals helped the undefeated Eagles defeat visiting Providence 3-0 in the Florida High School Athletic Association Region 1-2A first-round boys soccer playoffs on Feb. 3.
Twice a second-team All-First Coast honoree in lacrosse, Adams broke away to finish off a Fritz Parman assist in the 17th minute for Episcopal (19-0-3) and put the icing on the cake with a 79th-minute blast.
In between, Episcopal bombarded the Providence box early and often with cannonball throws of 35 yards or longer from senior center back Charlie DeVooght, one of them finding the head of Henry Morreale for a 2-0 lead.
Eagles goalkeeper Drew Monti denied Providence (11-6-1) the rest of the way to set the schools' career shutout record and beat the Stallions for the second time in a week, setting up a Feb. 10 home playoff against P.K. Yonge.
Global Leadership Academy saw its playoff debut end in a 3-1 defeat at Williston (13-3-5). The Kodiaks end the year at 10-3-3.
REGION 1-3A BOYS
In a rough night for Class 3A locals, seventh-seeded South Walton (6-9-4) surprised Gateway Conference champion Wolfson, 2-0. The Wolfpack close at 10-5-6.
Suwannee missed out in its road trip, going down 2-1 to Alachua Santa Fe (12-4-3). The Bulldogs finish at 11-10-4.
Two-time FHSAA champion Bolles fell short in the Panhandle with a 2-1 loss at Pensacola Catholic (13-5-1). Dixon McNeill scored the lone goal for Bolles (6-9-3).
Also exiting postseason soccer was Fernandina Beach (16-7-1), beaten 6-0 in the Panhandle by No. 1 seed North Bay Haven (15-3-1).
REGION 1-1A BOYS
Top seed University Christian marched onward with a home-field victory, 3-1 over visiting Mount Dora Christian (10-8-1). Micah Pfunter, Charles Rozona and Je Tee scored for UC (16-1-4), extending the school's best-ever season in the sport.
UC next plays at home Feb. 10 against Gainesville Oak Hall (9-8-1), which won 1-0 against St. Joseph on a goal from freshman Noah Poniatowski. The Flashes, state runners-up a year ago, end at 4-9-2.
REGION 1-1A GIRLS
Rocky Bayou Christian (9-5-1) knocked out Christ's Church 1-0 in a Tuesday contest. CCA ends at 8-9-1, while Rocky Bayou will be the next opponent for 15-time FHSAA champion St. Johns Country Day on Feb. 9.
