Impressive outside shooting fueled West M and John Glenn, while Zanesville put the clamps on Johnstown in the LCL to head top performers on Feb. 2-3.
COSHOCTON — Two teams with eyes on the Division V East District tournament played a see-saw affair for a half on Feb. 3.
Then hot-shooting West Muskingum went on a tear that blew its game with host Coshocton open in a 70-57 win in a Muskingum Valley League-Small School clash at The Wigwam.
Coshocton (8-10, 4-8 MVL-Small) led by four with a minute left before the half only to see West (14-4. 9-3), which hit 12 of 23 from beyond the arc, rattle off 28 of the next 37 points to take a 52-37 lead into the final quarter.
Coshocton got within six points of the lead with 2:30 left, but it got no closer as Kyle Porter had a key three-point play on a strong baseline drive to extend the lead and seal it.
Porter's game-high 21 points, which included a 4-of-5 effort on 3s, was supported by Tavin Bennett's 16 points and six assists, Noah Morrison's 15 points, four assists and three steals and Carter Smith's 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting. They were a combined 12-of-21 on 3s — Morrison was 5-of-9 — with 14 assists.
Champ Haley tallied 20 points with seven rebounds and J.J. Herman added 16 with six assists and four 3s for Coshocton, which shot 48 percent from the floor.
Zanesville 47, Johnstown 42: The host Blue Devils yielded only 23 points through three quarters and Ceejay Whitfield scored nine second-half points in a Licking County League crossover at Winland Memorial Gymnasium.
Zanesville (9-8, 5-5 LCL-Buckeye), which also got eight points from Lucca Wood and 5-of-6 free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter from Quinell Angler, led 36-23 entering the final frame.
Johnstown (12-3, 9-2 LCL-Cardinal) hit six second-half 3s — three from Greyson Goodman.
Rosecrans 58, Sugar Grover Berne Union 31: The Bishops held the Rockets (6-11) to 13-of-50 shooting from the field in a convincing Mid-State League-Cardinal Division conquest on the road.
Tyler Bernett had 16 points with 14 rebounds — he was 4-of-5 at the line — and Brody Boothe and Kohen Harris added 10 with four combined 3s for Rosecrans (11-5, 9-1 MSL-Cardinal), which stayed atop the division lead.
Owen Lambert added eight points as Rosecrans led 45-20 after three quarters.
John Glenn 85, Meadowbrook 62: Cooper Briggs and Stehl Bates scored 19 points and combined for nine of the Muskies' 17 3-pointers in an MVL crossover win at The Corral.
Brayden Davis scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half and Ben Stamm and C.J. Dolan added 14 as John Glenn (16-1, 12-1 MVL-Big), which led 59-39 after three quarters. remained one game up in the Big School standings.
Masyn Campbell had four 3s among his 18 points and Jake Burris added 15 for Meadowbrook (5-12, 5-7 MVL-Small).
Philo 57, New Lex 54: The Panthers outscored the Electrics (8-9, 5-7 MVL-Small), 27-9, from behind the arc, but it wasn't enough in an MVL crossover at The Power Plant.
Rusty Trout scored six of his 17 points in the fourth quarter and Kole Cash and K.J. Philip added 11 for Philo, which took a 38-28 lead before New Lex his six 3s in the final frame to gnaw into the lead.
Paul Stenson hit five second-half 3s — three in the fourth — among his 20 points and Eli Stephens added 17 with seven rebounds for New Lex (3-14, 0-12 MVL-Small). Lane Ratliff added nine assists and Tanner Toth six rebounds.
Tri-Valley 69, River View 39: Ryan Lamonica's stretch of strong play continued with a 17-point, eight-rebound effort against the neighboring Black Bears in an MVL-Big School game in Dresden.
Colten Rollison and Oliver Baker had 14 points and Jack Rapol 13 with a trio of 3s for Tri-Valley (11-8, 9-4), which led by as many as 33 points and took a 38-23 lead into the half. Troy Patterson added 10 points, six assists and four steals.
Carter Wesney's 17 points led River View (5-14, 4-8).
Sheridan 52, Morgan 41: Tyce Whiteman had 15 points and Colin Mallernee 14 in a balanced effort for the Generals in an MVL-Big School road win in McConnelsville.
Sheridan (11-6, 10-2 MVL-Big), one game back of John Glenn in the division, led just 34-29 entering the fourth after building a 22-18 lead at the intermission. But sophomore Graham Anderson, with more varsity time in the absence of injured Logan Russelll, scored eight of his nine points, including two 3s, in the final quarter.
Luke Coleman and Gavin Shriver had 12 points and Carsen Huck all eight of his points in the third quarter for Morgan (4-13, 2-10).
Maysville 82, Crooksville 51: The Panthers won their 16th straight game to stay unbeaten in the MVL-Small with a road win in McLuney.
Hiland 64, Ridgewood 25: The Generals dropped an Inter-Valley Conference-South Division game on the road to the powerful Hawks to fall to 9-9 overall and 5-7 in the conference.

Maysville 42, Crooksville 39: Avery Daniels tossed in six 3s among her game-high 22 points, and the Panthers were 8-of-11 at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter in an MVL-Small School road win in McLuney.
Miley Fulkerson was 4-of-4 at the line in the fourth and Lilah Jones 3-of-5, as the Panthers held off a late Ceramics charge after building a 29-19 lead through three quarters.
Mylee Davis tallied 16 points and Lexi Van Meter 15 for Crooksville, which was haunted by 8-of-18 free-throw shooting and outscored 24-3 on 3s.
Tri-Valley 62, Morgan 49: Maddie Garber fired in 19 of her season-high 27 points in the second half as the Scotties pulled away in an MVL-Big School win at home.
Garber had 12 points in the third quarter to outscore the Raiders by herself in that span. She finished with three 3-pointers.
Emma Smith added 10 points and Reagan Lamonica eight for Tri-Valley; Myleigh Williams had nine of her 18 in the fourth quarter and Gianna Myers chipped in 11 for Morgan.
West M 53, River View 31: Lyla Johnson and Teriauna Brandford tossed in 15 points to lead all scorers, as the Tornadoes remained in control of the MVL-Small School Division with a win at Luther Stover Gymnasium.
Kortnee Mickle scored 13 points and Regan Foster 12 for River View.
