US women's hockey team begins Olympics competition: How to watch, schedule

The United States plays the first of four games in group play.

The United States women's hockey national team begins its Olympics trek on Thursday, when the Americans take on Czechia in the first game of the group stage.

This matchup is the first of four in the preliminary round, which will continue through Feb. 10.

The women's hockey tournament is split into two unbalanced divisions, which are based on the current IIHF world rankings. All five teams in Group A automatically advance to the quarterfinal round, while the top three out of five teams in Group B also advance.

  • Group A: Canada, Czechia, Finland Switzerland, United States
  • Group B: France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Sweden

Five Bishop Kearney grads play for the United States women's hockey national team, including Rochester native Haley Winn, Caroline Harvey (defender) of New Hampshire, Laila Edwards (forward) of Ohio, Kirsten Simms (forward) of Michigan and Ava McNaughton (goalie) of Pennsylvania.

The matchup airs at 10:40 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5 on the USA Network.
