Has he done well in this regard since joining Bayern?
For years, Bayern Munich have been looking for a new leader in defense. After Mats Hummels left and he-who-shall-not-be-named was relegated to the bench, David Alaba briefly took over as leader before leaving to Real Madrid two years after making the transition to the center of defense. The likes of Lucas Hernandez and Niklas Süle were supposed to grow into the role, but they never did. Matthijs de Ligt was brought in specifically to fill this role but he was also gone in two years.
Now it is the turn of De Ligt’s replacement to try his hand at the role. Jonathan Tah, who took on more and more responsibility during his decade at Bayer Leverkusen, arrived at Bayern presumably to do the same in Munich. But, speaking ahead of the Bavarians’ clash against PSV in the Champions League, Tah brushes off praise for these skills. Asked how he would judge his leadership skills, he had this to say, as captured by @iMiaSanMia.
“That’s for others to judge. But of course I try to take responsibility, communicate a lot, help everyone to improve – on and off the pitch. But whether I do that well or not, that’s for others to judge,” said Tah.
It is too soon for a definitive judgement of his time at Bayern, but so far he has indeed taken responsibility and set an example in the heart of the Bavarian defense. If Tah keeps this up, he can be happy with his work.
