The future of one of the UFC’s top stars is a little clearer after the latest announcement.
Justin Gaethje defeated Paddy Pimblett to become the interim lightweight champion at the promotion’s first event of 2026.
This win brought some clarity to what had been a confusing landscape within the division.
What we did not know is when Ilia Topuria, who criticised both Gaethje and Pimblett after their fight, would be coming back for the unification clash.
A significant update has now shed light on how and when ‘El Matador’ will return.
Ilia Topuria shares training clip just before reports surface about his personal life
Back in November, Topuria made it known that he would be stepping away from the Octagon for a bit, pointing to a “difficult moment” in his personal life as the reason.
He told fans he had no plans to keep the lightweight division waiting and that he would inform the UFC when he felt ready to return.
The UFC reportedly never considered stripping Topuria of his title, but the lack of clarity around his return still led to the interim belt being introduced.
Topuria’s absence naturally raised questions about how long it might take him to resolve these issues and what kind of impact it could have on his fighting future.
But there’s now some positive news for his supporters. According to MARCA, Topuria and his ex-wife have signed a settlement agreement and closed their case.
Not long before this news broke, Topuria posted training videos on Instagram with the caption: “The champ is back!!!”
Ilia Topuria expected to target the UFC’s White House card for return bout
Topuria had mentioned that he was aiming to return between April and June, and now it seems there is a clear frontrunner for his comeback fight.
MARCA’s Irati Prat reported alongside the news of his personal settlement that Topuria is already preparing for a bout expected to take place at the UFC’s White House event on 14 June.
Alvaro Colmenero followed up by noting there is a “90%” chance, according to his sources, that Topuria will face Gaethje on that same card.
Gaethje’s status as interim champion – and the fact he won the belt while representing the US – only adds weight to this particular match-up headlining such a high-profile show.
Fans might have to wait a bit longer for an official announcement but signs point towards Topuria getting back into camp with real purpose after months of uncertainty.
