Clarkstown's Khloe Henshaw won the Section 1 gymnastics all-around title and led the team to a team title Thursday at Eclipse Gymnastics
MAHOPAC ― Saturday's Section 1 gymnastics championships saw a Henshaw rise to the top of the pack once again.
No, this isn't 2018 but at Eclipse Gymnastics, Clarkstown's Khloe Henshaw won the all-around title.
The last Rockland gymnast to win the all-around title was Khloe's sister Alexa back in 2018.
She scored a massive 38.925 and also won the vault and floor exercise titles.
"I'm very proud of myself," Henshaw said. "I think I can do better on vault and (uneven) bars, clean it up a bit. I'll be fine.
"I'm very excited. It's very much a family thing. I'm very excited."
A banner day for Rockland County gymnasts
Henshaw's performance topped a banner day for Rockland County gymnastics. The all-around podium featured not just Henshaw, but Suffern's Giselle and Lily Reda took second and third respectively.
"I'm really proud of how it went," Giselle Reda said. "There's definitely highs and lows on each event. I'm excited to work in the gym and get ready for states."
The last time Rockland County swept the all-around podium was in 2014. At that time it was three Nyack gymnasts - Ryan Stack, Amara Cunningham and Cassie Wishner.
Henshaw and the Reda sisters will be the three all-around gymnasts representing Section 1 at the New York State championships later this month. NYSPHSAA's championship meet will be held Feb. 28 at Valley Gymnastics in Utica.
"It means a lot to me," Lily Reda said. "Giselle's my sister, Khloe's one of my really closest friends. I'm really excited to compete with them and I'm really proud of my performance."
Giselle and Lily Reda won the uneven bars and balance beam titles respectively.
Clarkstown wins for first time in a decade
The last time Clarkstown won the Section 1 team title, Simone Biles won her third straight World All-Around title in 2015.
That feat was accomplished by the current crop of Clarkstown gymnasts Thursday with a score of 175.65. Lakeland/Panas finished second with a score of 173.6.
"I think the team did very well," Henshaw said. "We all put in a lot of hard work to get there. I'm very proud of the team."
Olivia Marricco makes state team
Lakeland senior Olivia Marricco came into the Thursday's championships poised to make some history.
The three-time all-around champion came into the meet looking to become the third Section 1 gymnast to win four all-around titles.
Marricco finished the day sixth in the all-around (37.025) and took second on the uneven bars (9.725). She's happy that she's going to states for only one event.
"I'm just happy I'm going to states," Marricco said. "I think it's good to give other people an opportunity to do the all-around. It's less stressful because states is a long competition. I'm happy going to do one event."
She led the Rebels to a second place finish as a team.
"I think the team did good," Marricco said. "We gave it our all. I think everyone did the best that they can."
Who makes the Section 1 team for the NYSPHSAA meet?
The 15-member NYSPHSAA team was chosen and will compete at Valley Gymnastics in Utica beginning at 10 a.m. on Feb. 28.
