Fossil Ridge basketball's Jaimeson Peterson is the Blue FCU Boys Athlete of the Week after setting the school's single-game assists record.
This week's Blue Federal Credit Union Boys Athlete of the Week award is setting records on the court.
Fossil Ridge's Jaimeson Peterson took top honors in the Fort Collins area for the week of Jan. 26-31 after a record-breaking performance.
Peterson broke the SaberCats' single-game assists record, dropping 14 dimes in a dominant win over city rival Rocky Mountain on Jan. 27.
The junior's passing or scoring led to all 22 of Fossil's first-quarter points and he piled up eight assists before halftime.
Overall, Peterson accounted for 38 points between assists and scoring, over half of Fossil's offensive output in the game.
He finished the game with a double-double, adding 11 rebounds, five points and two blocks in an excellent all-around performance.
It was a cool moment for the Fossil Ridge program, too.
Peterson broke the old record of 13, set by current assistant coach Mitch Ackelson in 2008.
The point guard continues to be arguably the most versatile player on a surging SaberCat squad. Through Feb. 5, he's averaging 7.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 3 stocks (steals + blocks) per game with four double-doubles this season.
Fossil Ridge is 14-5 and an unbeaten 8-0 in league play, ranked No. 15 in CHSAA's selection and seeding index that eventually determines playoff seeding.
The SaberCat standout is the second Fossil boys basketball player to win Blue FCU's Athlete of the Week award this season, joining teammate Malachi Egbuji.
Fossil fans got the vote out, pushing Peterson atop a tight two-man race with 49.3% of the total vote.
That ultimately propelled the SaberCat record-setter ahead of four other outstanding boys Athlete of the Week nominees:
- Brody Makloski, Fort Collins wrestling (runner-up with 48.2%)
- Brady Swigert, Rocky Mountain wrestling
- Robert Kendall, Windsor wrestling
- Andrew Schams, Windsor Charter Academy basketball
The Blue Federal Credit Union Athlete of the Week series features five nominees on Mondays, with voting at Coloradoan.com until 11:59 a.m. every Thursday.
Fans can nominate their favorite athletes (deadline: 11:59 p.m. every Sunday), and the Coloradoan Sports staff will ultimately select the nominees each week.
