Los Angeles Rams starting quarterback Matthew Stafford won the AP’s NFL Most Valuable Player Award on Thursday night at the NFL Honors show.
This is the first AP NFL MVP Award of Stafford’s 17-season career. He also made history as the oldest first-time MVP winner in NFL history and the third oldest player overall to win the award behind Tom Brady in 2017 and Aaron Rodgers in 2021.
Stafford was considered a frontrunner for the award all season, with New England Patriots second-year quarterback Drake Maye being his closest competitor for the honor.
The MVP race between Stafford and Maye was the closest since Peyton Manning and Steve McNair were co-MVPs in 2003. Stafford ultimately received 24 of 50 first-place votes and finished with 366 points, while Maye received 23 first-place votes and finished with 361 points.
In addition to winning MVP, Stafford earned an AP first team All-Pro selection for the first time in his career. He led the NFL with 4,707 passing yards and a career-high 46 passing touchdowns this season.
Stafford Announced He Will Be Returning Next Season
Rumors have circulated about the possibility of Stafford retiring this offseason. But Stafford revealed during his acceptance speech that he would be returning to the Rams next season.
“You’re unbelievable cheerleaders for me. I appreciate it,” Stafford said, thanking his wife and four daughters for their support of his career. “I am so happy to have you at the games on the sideline with me, and I can’t wait for you to cheer me on next year when we’re out there kicking ass.”
The Rams have a championship caliber roster and are led by one of the top coaches in the NFL in Sean McVay. The Super Bowl is also set to take place at SoFi Stadium next season.
Next season could be the last of Stafford’s career, and superstar wide receiver Davante Adams will be playing on the final season of his two-year, $44 million contract with Los Angeles.
After losing in the NFC Championship this season, the stage is set for Stafford to lead the Rams to the second Super Bowl title of his career, and this time at the team’s home stadium in Los Angeles.
