Girona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen has undergone successful surgery on a thigh injury but it remains to be seen whether he can recover in time to play for Germany at the World Cup in summer.

Girona said in a brief statement on Saturday that it "will depend on his progress" in the rehabilitation process when he can play again. Ter Stegen had said on social media he expects to be sidelined "for several months.

Ter Stegen injured himself last weekend in his second match for Girona after a loan move from Barcelona where he was not first choice anymore and had only played once in December in the wake of back surgery last summer.

German national team coach Julian Nagelsmann has said that Ter Stegen must play to retain his number one status in the national team for the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

It is doubtful whether Ter Stegen can feature in March friendlies against Switzerland and Ghana which are the only games before Nagelsmann announces his World Cup squad.

Ter Stegen gained number one status after the international retirement of Manuel Neuer in 2024. Oliver Baumann was between the posts in all qualifiers in autumn but there have also been calls for a Neuer return which the veteran has ruled out.

Bayern Munich's Neuer and Hoffenheim's Baumann face each other in the Bundesliga later Sunday, with Nagelsmann to be in attendance.
