Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa spoke after the 2-0 win over Valencia to praise his side, and, in particular, Kylian Mbappé, as he said, “we’re very lucky to have him. He’s the best player in the world right now. It’s something that, as I said, Cristiano seemed to be out of this world and Kylian has a long way to go, but he has what it takes to follow in his footsteps. Why not surpass him? If anyone can, it’s Kylian.”

Arbeloa on the win

“Yes, we knew what we were coming into. They had three wins in 11 years and I was lucky enough to come to Mestalla a lot as a player. I know how difficult it is. It’s important for them to play against Madrid. And with the five-man defence they played with, we knew we had to be patient. We had to play a very serious game and we are deserved winners.”

Arbeloa on right-back options

“It doesn’t matter where you put Valverde, he always performs spectacularly. I know he’s happier in midfield and that’s where we’re going to get the most out of him. David’s performance was hugely commendable. It’s great news that the lads from the academy can play matches at this level. I’m very proud. As for Trent, after a long time out, we’ll be cautious. We want him to find his rhythm little by little. That’s how it will be with Trent.”

Arbeloa on Dani Carvajal

“Dani is looking better and better. He’s taking it slowly. I won’t take any risks. He worked on his day off. There’s nothing to say in the dressing room. He’s always listened to. He’s important to the players. He’ll find his best form with the patience we’re showing.”

Arbeloa on another clean sheet

“It’s one aspect. I’m sure we can raise our level of play in terms of brilliance. We have a lot of room for improvement. But a team is built on solidity and commitment. Courtois didn’t make any saves. Dedication, commitment, sacrifice. Madrid demonstrated those values again today.”

Arbeloa on the value of the win

“Playing at Mestalla is always like going to the dentist. We knew it would be a difficult match, that they would be very demanding. It was a very serious and committed game. I’m happy, we’ll keep improving.”

Arbeloa on the difficulty of the game

“Mestalla is always difficult because of the atmosphere and the desire they always show against Real Madrid. But we managed to overcome it, we controlled the game well, Courtois didn’t have to make any saves. The players worked very hard and showed great commitment.”

Arbeloa on goals from Carreras and Mbappé

“Álvaro’s goal shows that he has a lot of talent going forward. He also scored a great goal against Valencia in the first leg. There are no adjectives left to describe Kylian. We thought we weren’t going to see anything like Cristiano, but this one is on his way.”
