Real Madrid secured three valuable point with 2-0 victory over Valencia in La Liga but the spotlight quickly shifted from the result to major selection decision.

Head coach Alvaro Arbeloa surprised many by starting academy graduate David Jimenez at right-back.

At the same time, experienced options Dani Carvajal & Trent Alexander Arnold were left on the bench.

Jimenez aged 21 was later replaced by Alexander-Arnold in the 76 minute marking the England international’s return from injury.

Carvajal however did not play at all, a decision that appeared to surprise the veteran defender.

Visible frustration after the match

After the final whistle, cameras showed Carvajal in a long conversation with fitness coach Antonio Pintus.

The 34 year-old looked unhappy which quickly fueled speculation about his situation at the club.

In the post-match press conference, Arbeloa tried to calm the situation.

He said Carvajal is improving step by step in training but stressed that he does not want to “take any risks” with his fitness.

The coach also described Carvajal as important figure in the dressing room.

Contract talks and unclear future

According to The Athletic, Real Madrid have doubts about renewing Carvajal’s contract which expires in June.

The report also states that people close to the player are not fully convinced about continuing at the club.

This situation could push Madrid to look for new right-back in the summer, an idea that has already been discussed internally.

Carvajal has spent 23 year at the club and holds a special place among fans but his role has clearly changed in recent weeks.

Since returning from injury, he has played only limited minutes and has not featured at all in the last four match.

A Captain under pressure

Carvajal remains the team captain and one of the most decorated players in Real Madrid’s recent history.

However increased competition, injury concerns and contract uncertainty have created unusual situation for player once considered untouchable.
