Rutgers football’s Associate Director of Player Development, Tyrell Smith, has joined James Franklin’s coaching staff at Virginia Tech to be their new Director of Player Development.

Smith has a strong connection to both schools, as he grew up and played high school football in North Brunswick before joining the Hokies as a part of the 2015 recruitment class. He wound up having an unusually long career with the Hokies, redshirting several years due to injuries and COVID before he aged out in 2021.

Smith has served three non-consecutive years on the Rutgers coaching staff. He was a player development assistant in 2022 before becoming a strength and conditioning assistant with Boise State in 2023. He then moved back to Rutgers to be their Associate Director of Player Development in 2024-2025.

Smith has become another name in a long list of coaches who have departed from Rutgers this offseason.
