Sunderland vs Liverpool: Dream Big At The Stadium Of Light

I’ll keep on dreaming until the dream is dead this season because, why the hell not?

Liverpool under the lights at the Stadium of Light is one of the games that we dreamt about when making the trek to Fleetwood, Accrington, and Burton just a few short years ago. The champions may be off the boil this season in terms of title credentials, but it’s still the sort of game it’s hard not to be excited for.

Our underwhelming away form continued on Saturday, but in fairness, we far from disgraced ourselves at the Emirates, and Arsenal look set to win the title this year. We gave them a match for about an hour, and the second goal put the game beyond us. There’s a reason only one team has left that part of North London with all three points on just one occasion this season.

At the Stadium of Light, however, we are a different beast and are still unbeaten as February carries on. After a couple of draws, we’ve won back-to-back games at the SoL, scoring five goals in the process, which is a good start to our need to score more goals.

Wednesday night under the Wearside lights will be a tougher challenge than Crystal Palace or Burnley, but it feels as though Liverpool will far from relish coming to the SoL on their current run. A late defeat at home to Man City means they’ve won just one in seven before their trip across from Merseyside; no guesses as to who that one win was against.

Liverpool have been far from their fluent best this season, and our 1-1 draw at Anfield could have been even better if certain chances had fallen our way. If feeling disappointed with a point away at the reigning Premier League champions isn’t a sign of how far we’ve come, then I don’t know what is.

Liverpool at home is up there with welcoming Man Utd, Arsenal, and Chelsea in terms of feeling like we’re back in the Premier League. Our last home game against Liverpool was a rarity in that it was one of the few home games we didn’t lose during the 2016-17 season. Jermain Defoe scored two penalties in a 2-2 draw for the Lads, and the brief glimpse of hope came between a 4-1 loss at Burnley and then being turned over 3-1 at home to Stoke.

Sunderland v Liverpool - Premier League

It’s easy to forget just how bad we were in that last Premier League season, but it’s important to remember that after finally shedding a lot of dead weight, both on and off the pitch, how much work has been needed to get to where we are now.

Liverpool are still a colossus, one of the biggest and most widely supported teams in world football. However, we’ve shown in games against Arsenal, Chelsea, and Man City this season that we won’t roll over for any of the big boys, and we’ll give as good as we’ve got.

That 2-2 draw back in January 2017 was worth celebrating, as it was a point that gave some of us hope that we could put the fight in our relegation fight. A point this time around would keep us in the top half, whilst all three points would move us back firmly into the European places. I’ll keep on dreaming until the dream is dead this season because, why the hell not?
