After losing 6-0 and 1-5 in their previous Bundesliga encounters with Bayern Munich this season, RB Leipzig will look for revenge when they visit the German champions in the DFB-Pokal quarter-finals on Wednesday.
Despite the heavy loss, Leipzig did cause problems for Bayern in last month’s clash at the Red Bull Arena, going into half-time with a 1-0 lead – and head coach Ole Werner believes they can build on that.
“It will come down to us defending well and aggressively at different heights. We need to act as a unit, keep our distances tight, and work together against the ball. At the same time, we want to play football ourselves and be dangerous – the second leg showed that we are capable of doing that,” Werner said at a press conference on Tuesday about the game plan for Wednesday.
“We have nothing to lose tomorrow. We need to take advantage of the spaces that open up to us, with courage and confidence. We have the players on the pitch who can hurt Bayern,” he added.
“First of all, it’s a different competition, and secondly, the second leg gave us a lot of clues showing that we can hurt Bayern. I think we played a very good game over 80 minutes. But the fact is, we still need to play even better in Munich.”
The quarter-final kicks off at Allianz Arena on Wednesday at 20:45 CET.
