Spring sports excape the cold of CNY to start their season
We’re back today to get you caught up on the latest from Syracuse’s Olympic Sports including the opening of the 2026 softball campaign.
Ice Hockey (14-15-3, 10-10-2):
Syracuse split a home series with RIT last weekend. The Orange got a 3-2 win on a goal from Jessica Cheung before dropping a 4- 2decision last Saturday. Syracuse remains one point behind RIT in the standings. The Orange close the regular season at Mercyhurst.
We were mistaken last week and the Orange have three connections at the Milan Olympics. Syracuse Head Coach Britni Smith is on the coaching staff for Team Canada. alum Melissa Piacentini is a video coach with Team USA and alum Akane Hosoyamada will compete in her 3rd Olympics as part of Team Japan.
Japan is 1-2 with one game remaining against Sweden today. Hosoyamada has 0 points and 2 penalty minutes through the first three games. The US and Canada head into today’s Group A showdown with identical 3-0 records.
Softball (3-2):
Syracuse started the 2026 season with back-to-back losses to Binghamton and South Carolina at last week’s Gamecock Invitational. The team bounced back to beat Binghamton and then take two from Winthrop to secure a winning weekend.
Madison Knight went 2-1 on the mound and led the way with two homers in 9 at-bats over the weekend. Knight was also walked 8 times as she starts the season with an OPS of 2.209.
Track and Field:
After a week off, Syracuse will head to Clemson and BU to compete this weekend.
Tennis (3-3):
Syracuse lost a 4-3 decision to UMas, but bounced back with a 5-2 win over Boston University. Nelly Knezkova and Monika Wojcik lead the Orange with 4-2 singles records so far this spring.
The team will host Buffalo on Thursday before beginning ACC play next week.
We’ll have more updates next week.
