Ida, Whiteford, Summerfield move on to boys basketball regionals

Ida, Whiteford and Summerfield capture district basketball championships while New Boston Huron falls in finals.

Ida boys basketball coach Jared Karner glanced at his watch and notched his heart rate.

“I asked my assistants, ‘Is 140 good?’” he said with a laugh.

Phil Schiffler of Summerfield and Whiteford’s Jordan Bollin probably were dealing with similar tension as they watched their teams play in district championship games on Friday, Feb. 27.

All three teams were crowned as champions while New Boston Huron fell in a title game.

Gavin Albring of Ida has his shot contested by Jefferson's Brayden Burkmier during a 63-52 Ida victory in the finals of the Division 2 Boys Basketball District Tournament at Jefferson on Friday, Feb. 27, 2026.

DIVISION 2 AT JEFFERSON

Ida 63, Jefferson 52

NEWPORT – Ida which last won a district in 2022, treated Karner to his first title.

“I love this group,” he said of his 17-7 team. “They play for each other. They play with such intensity.”

Ida trailed 13-12 after one quarter, but took charge by controlling the middle two periods 36-22.

“I love our defense,” Karner said. “People don’t know how good it is.”

Owen Snyder and Jacob Towne netted 15 points apiece to lead the offense.

Grady Brooks of Jefferson goes to the basket against Ida's Hazen Vogt during a 63-52 Ida victory in the finals of the Division 2 Boys Basketball District Tournament at Jefferson on Friday, Feb. 27, 2026.

Jefferson’s Trey Oldenburg led all scorers with 19 points and freshman Hunter Barton scored 14.

“We left it all on the court,” Jefferson coach Corey Wiley said. “They were just more physical and controlled the tempo. Proud of the great season we had.”

The Bears set a school record for wins in a season while going 18-6.

Ida will play Redford Westfield in the regional at Dearborn Divine Child at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

DIVISION 3 AT ERIE MASON

Whiteford 55, Riverview Richard 39

ERIE – Whiteford yielded 14 points in the opening quarter and allowed just 15 over the next two periods combined.

“It was a defensive tour de force,” Whiteford coach Jordan Bollin said. “We started the game in our standard man-to-man press but after the first quarter we switched to a 1-3-1. That decision ended up winning us the game. We were able to limit penetration and contest on the perimeter.”

Cole Griffith and Caden Schroyer were outstanding on the other end of the court.

Griffith was 7-of-9 from the floor and 9-of-11 from the free-throw line in a 23-point effort.

Schoyer finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds, including 9 offensive boards.

The Bobcats will take a 21-3 record to the regional at Clinton where they will take on Onsted at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

DIVISION 3 AT MORENCI

Summerfield 51, Lenawee Christian 50

MORENCI – Rylee Schiffler connected on a shot from well beyond the 3-point line with 3 seconds remaining to give Summerfield the win.

“Rylee didn’t do much offensively in this game, but he hit the one that mattered,” Summerfield coach Phil Schiffler said of his son. “It’s kind of special because I’ve been coaching him since he’s been able to walk. This is why you do it.”

Rylee Schiffler started and ended the winning play.

“We put the ball in Rylee’s hands,” his father said. “They played us man-to-man. They kind of knew what was coming. We wanted to get the ball to Brody (St. John), but he was not open.”

The ball wound up in the hands of Aaron Hoffman in the corner. He passed to St. John, who shuffled it to Schiffler for the winning shot.

“I’m excited,” coach Schiffer said. “What a game.”

Easton LaPont scored 19 points and St. John 16 for the 17-7 Bulldogs, who will play Webberville at Concord at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

DIVISION 2

Woodhaven 47, New Boston Huron 41

TRENTON – Huron’s season came to a close at 16-8.

“This team bought into something bigger than themselves all season and even more so tonight, which gave us a chance to compete for a District championship,” Huron coach Ted Tackett said. “Unfortunately, we came up short.”

Zennon Grant led the Chiefs with 13 points.

“I want to thank the Huron community for their incredible support throughout the season,” Tackett said. “I’m proud of this team and everything they represented.”
