Why are you a UNC fan?

Let’s hear your fandom origin stories.

There are two versions of what I’d call the traditional path to becoming a fan of a college team: you got a degree from the school, or one or both of your parents did.

My mom got her bachelor’s at Meredith (the women’s college in Raleigh) and her master’s at Carolina, and those two years were all she needed to become a ride or die Tar Heels fan. She made sure I grew up the same way; a plush Rameses was among my first stuffed animals, and I knew the words to Hark the Sound long before The Star-Spangled Banner.

I didn’t end up attending Carolina–I got in, but I was offered a scholarship elsewhere that I would have been stupid to pass up. Still, my love for the Tar Heels never wavered. Even as I became immersed in the landscape of the Big 12, Carolina (and the ACC) always felt more like home. That’s a big reason I joined the staff here at Tar Heel Blog.

For today’s discussion, tell us how you became a UNC fan. Are you a first-, second-, or even third-generation Tar Heel? Was your path to donning Carolina blue different from either of the traditional ones?

Leave your responses in the comments.
