Playoff report: The Calvary Day boys basketball team beat Greater Atlanta Christian, led by the Cavs former coach, to advance to the Elite Eight.
It was an evenly matched playoff battle as the Calvary Day boys basketball team hosted Greater Atlanta Christian Saturday with the Cavs going up against their former coach Scepter Brownlee, who left after last season to take over the program at GAC.
The Cavaliers didn't play their best game of the year, but they came up big in key moments to beat the Spartans 51-47.
Calvary Day, which entered the playoffs at No. 8 in the GHSA's Playoff Power Rankings, improved to 23-7 on the season and will take a road trip to Rome to face No. 1 Darlington (27-2) in an Elite Eight matchup set for Wednesday, March 4th, at a time to be announced.
Brownlee, a veteran coach who played college ball at the University of San Francisco, led the Cavaliers for two seasons after a stint as an assistant with the Mississippi State women's program for three years. He announced he was stepping down last April.
Bob Martin, another veteran with 30 years of coaching experience, was quicky named to replace Brownlee and has led the Cavs to a memorable season in his first year at the helm.
In a back and forth game, GAC was hurt by a pair of substitution technical fouls, one in each half, and Calvary junior Jamin Martin, the coach's son, converted all four free throws, which turned out to equal the winning margin for the Cavs.
Jamin Martin and his classmate, Chiel Singleton, led the Cavs with 13 points each and senior Demetrius Brown added nine points. GAC (17-12) was led by 6-foot-8 sophomore Baer Bailey, who had 15 points, while junior guard Adrian Hughes had 14 points.
"I mean this was a 50-50 game tonight and it could have gone either way," said Bob Martin, who coached at Pickens High for two seasons before coming to Savannah. "We had to battle every possession, but I do like the resilience we showed, without a doubt. We've been working on that for a while, and it has kind of evolved over time. I'm really proud of the way our guys moved on to the next play throughout the game."
Brown, who was recently named Region 3-3A's Co-Offensive Player of the Year, said the game had added importance because the seniors realized it could be the final time playing on their homecourt and due to the fact they were facing their former coach.
"We all have a lot of respect for Coach Brownlee, but of course we wanted to beat his team tonight and show him what we could do," Brown said. "Greater Atlanta Christian worked hard and showed a lot of grit, but we knew we had to win this one to keep our season alive."
