Manchester City had two injury concerns coming out of their 1-0 win over Leeds United on Saturday. Erling Haaland missed the match due to an injury he suffered in training last week. Nico O’Reilly was taken off after 70 minutes due to an ankle injury he sustained in a tough challenge against Leeds. All eyes were on Manchester City’s starting lineup announcement tonight to see if Haaland and O’Reilly would take part in tonight’s pivotal Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest. Erling Haaland has returned to the starting lineup but Nico O’Reilly misses tonight’s match due to injury.

Nico O’Reilly’s absence is a blow for Manchester City.

News of Nico O’Reilly’s absence for tonight’s match filtered out before Manchester City announced their matchday squad for tonight’s match. Simon Bajkowski of the Manchester Evening News reported on X that O’Reilly wasn’t with the City squad when they arrived at the Etihad this evening. Nico O’Reilly’s absence was confirmed when City’s starting lineup and matchday squad was announced.

Nico O’Reilly’s absence for tonight’s match is a blow for Manchester City. O’Reilly’s physicality and size would have been an asset against Nottingham Forest’s midfield. Also, O’Reilly’s ability to get forward from midfield and his combination play with Bernardo Silva, Rodri, and Rayan Ait-Nouri will be missed. Nico O’Reilly has been one of Manchester City’s most influential players recently, so City will miss the 20-year-old midfielder tonight.

Phil Foden has the opportunity to get himself going again against Nottingham Forest.

Perhaps the silver lining in Nico O’Reilly’s absence is that Phil Foden gets the opportunity to start at the Etihad against Nottingham Forest tonight. Foden started this season superbly, but his form has tapered off since December. Foden has been primarily used as a substitute recently, and if he can put in a good showing tonight, it may kick-start his season. That is the hope for Foden tonight: that he can begin to resemble the player that started this season so well in a must-win match for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Manchester City will be without Nico O’Reilly tonight against Nottingham Forest. That is a blow for City given how important O’Reilly has become to Pep Guardiola’s side. The hope is that O’Reilly can return sooner rather than later for City given the number of important matches they have coming up. O’Reilly’s absence does give Phil Foden an opportunity to start, and hopefully Foden seizes it and plays a key role for his team at the Etihad tonight.
