In what was largely a cagey midweek contest, the breakthrough required a moment of genuine quality. It arrived with just over 15 minutes remaining, as Christian Kofane’s superb half-volley proved decisive for Kasper Hjulmand’s side, who were the more convincing outfit throughout.
Leverkusen started on the front foot, monopolising possession while HSV sat deep and looked to frustrate. Debutant Montrell Culbreath came close inside eight minutes, ghosting in at the back post to glance Ibrahim Maza’s cross narrowly wide. Moments later, Martin Terrier went even closer, latching onto Aleix García’s delivery only to see his effort crash against the crossbar from close range.
The visitors thought they had a penalty after 15 minutes when Maza was brought down by Nicolai Remberg. The referee initially pointed to the spot, but VAR intervened and downgraded the decision to a free-kick on the edge of the area - a reprieve HSV ultimately survived.
After weathering the early storm, the hosts began to grow into the game, but clear-cut opportunities remained scarce as the first half drifted towards a goalless interval.
Leverkusen resumed the second period with the same authority. Edmond Tapsoba was central to much of the early action after the restart, first meeting another García cross with a free header that was directed straight at Daniel Heuer Fernandes. Twelve minutes later, the defender bundled the ball home from a corner, only for the effort to be correctly ruled out for handball.
The pressure finally told in the 73rd minute. Maza, Leverkusen’s liveliest performer on the night, drove purposefully towards the penalty area before delicately clipping a pass into Kofane’s path. The forward responded emphatically, lashing a fierce half-volley beyond Heuer Fernandes to break the deadlock.
Rather than retreat, Leverkusen continued to push. Culbreath slid a precise pass through to Alejandro Grimaldo, who found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but Heuer Fernandes stood tall to keep HSV’s hopes alive.
In truth, the hosts struggled to muster a meaningful response. With the clock ticking down their last effort on target had come in the 55th minute, underlining their lack of cutting edge in the final third. Six minutes of added time offered a late lifeline, and deep into stoppage time Luka Vušković was handed a golden opportunity. His initial effort was repelled at point-blank range by Janis Blaswich, and his follow-up struck the crossbar - a dramatic final twist that ultimately preserved Leverkusen’s lead.
It was a significant away victory for Die Werkself, who remain sixth but move onto 43 points, now just three adrift of fourth-placed Stuttgart. For HSV, the defeat extends their winless run to three matches, leaving them 11th and only four points clear of the relegation play-off spot.
