The countdown is almost over for FC Barcelona fan favourite midfielder Gavi to complete one of the most anticipated comebacks of the season.

A little over five months after undergoing arthroscopic surgery to resolve issues with the external meniscus in his right knee, the La Masia graduate is all set to return to squad dynamics, confirms SPORT.

Although Gavi is not yet ready to play high-intensity minutes in upcoming matches against Athletic Club in Bilbao and Newcastle United in the UEFA Champions League, his return to the pitch now appears imminent.

Commenting on his situation earlier today, manager Hansi Flick said: “He’ll travel with us. He’s training with us, but he’s not ready to play yet. Maybe after the next break. We’ll see.”

Timely boost

With Gavi back at Flick’s disposal, the range of possibilities for the Barça squad expands significantly.

The German coach knows that the midfielder’s return adds a high-quality option to a midfield that has been heavily affected by injuries in recent months.

Frenkie de Jong remains sidelined for several weeks, while Pedri is still being carefully managed after his latest muscular problem.

In that context, Gavi’s return is particularly valuable. He is one of those footballers capable of changing a match at any moment.

He is a player capable of leading the press and aggressively chasing the ball to recover possession, dropping deeper to help the pivot during build-up play, and driving forward into the opponent’s penalty area.

In short, Gavi contributes energy, intensity and creativity – qualities that perfectly match what Flick demands from his midfielders.

Final stage of his recovery

For several weeks now, Gavi has been training on the pitch, recently rejoining group sessions. As Flick himself acknowledged, the midfielder is almost ready to return to competitive action and begin accumulating minutes again during a crucial stage of the season.

The timing of his return is important. La Liga is entering its most intense phase, while the Champions League knockout rounds are already underway.

Gavi is now close to full fitness and only needs the final step: returning to high-level competition.
