Girls hockey: Oyster River/PHS moves on, STA/WHS/Dover eliminated

The Oyster River/Portsmouth girls hockey team advanced to the Division I semifinals with a 3-1 win over No. 6 Keene on Friday at the Whittemore Center.

DURHAM - Ava Gasowski had one goal and one assist to lead the third-seeded Oyster River/Portsmouth girls hockey team to a 3-1 win over No. 6 Keene on Friday, March 6 in a Division I quarterfinal at the Whittemore Center.

"I thought the team played really well tonight," Oyster River coach Sadie Wright-Ward said. "I was impressed with how well we moved the puck and played with confidence."

Oyster River (14-5) will face No. 2 Berlin (15-4) on Tuesday, March 10 in a semifinal game at Everett Arena in Concord. Berlin advanced with a 7-0 win over No. 10 Exeter.

"We're excited to be moving on to the semifinals and will be ready to go against Berlin," Wright-Ward said. "We know they are a good team, so we will need to play a hard-fought complete game to come away with the victory."

The teams met once in the regular season with Oyster River pulling out a 7-5 win on Feb. 7.

Oyster River's Meagan Rinko and Eliza Farwell both scored a goal against Keene, while Sadie Houle and Isabella Kane each had an assist. Oyster River goalie Sage Bussiere had 12 saves.

No. 4 St. Thomas/Winnacunnet/Dover 1

DOVER - Jayelyn Somerset, assisted by Isabel Lilly and Elizabeth Pelletier, scored the lone goal for St. Thomas/Winnacunnet/Dover in its Division I quarterfinal loss at Dover Ice Arena.

The Saints end their season with a record of 11-5-2.

"Our girls played a hard-fought game tonight but ultimately fell short," St. Thomas coach Maria Hendrickson said. "It was one heck of a season for this team, and I couldn’t have been prouder of their accomplishments. 

STA/WHS/Dover goalie Aryah Lilly had 21 saves.
