Rodrigo De Paul’s debut for Inter Miami ended in a 2-1 win over Atlas in the Leagues Cup, but the Argentine midfielder was quick to admit he’s still finding his way with the team.

After the game, De Paul was honest about where he’s at:

“Physically I feel great. But since I haven’t trained with the team yet, I don’t have that connection with everyone. I’ll admit, I didn’t expect to play 90 minutes. But for me, physically, that’s never a problem. I train a lot during the off-season. Now it’s about keeping my head down and working to get better.”

Signed just four days before the game, Rodrigo De Paul arrived from Atlético Madrid on a loan deal that runs through the end of the season with an option to extend through 2029.

He played his first game without having trained with Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Luis Suárez, yet he went the full 90 minutes.

Despite the lack of training time, De Paul didn’t disappoint. He had a 93% pass accuracy, three key passes and created chances, 7.4 Sofascore rating. He grew into the game in the second half and even though Atlas equalized late, Miami won it in stoppage time thanks to a VAR confirmed goal.

Lionel Messi, who was involved of both goals, praised his former Argentina teammate:

“We know each other well and have played so many games together. He has so much desire. Today he played the whole game—that’s a lot, especially in this heat. He’s a big addition to this team.”

Manager Javier Mascherano said the same, “You can see what he brings even when the timing isn’t there yet.”

Inter Miami will face Necaxa on August 2 and Pumas UNAM on August 6 in the Leagues Cup. The hope after more time on the pitch, and in training, is straightforward, De Paul should go from fitting to leading.
