As FC Barcelona approach the final stretch of the season with the La Liga title within reach, another major development could arrive at the same time: the renewal of Hansi Flick.

The German coach has openly confirmed his intention to extend his contract beyond 2027, when his current deal expires.

In recent weeks, his agent, Pini Zahavi, has held meetings with the club’s board and a verbal agreement was reached to extend the manager’s contract by one additional season, until June 2028. The extension reflects the coach’s own desire to remain in charge.

Flick wants to continue developing La Masia talents

Now, according to SPORT, Flick sees Barcelona as the ideal place to conclude his managerial career and believes he can build a successful cycle. A key part of that vision involves continued trust in youth development.

Looking ahead to next season, he is particularly interested in promoting two young prospects: Xavi Espart and Tommy Marques.

Espart has been pretty much in the first-team dynamics for almost the entire ongoing campaign, barring the couple of months he was out injured.

The 18-year-old La Masia right-back made his senior debut in a Champions League clash against Newcastle United and has since played three more times.

As for Tommy, he too has been in and around the first-team squad for most of the season, filling in due to the continued injury absences in midfield.

The 19-year-old La Masia talent had his maiden appearance in the La Liga game against Mallorca in February, but has not played since.

With Marc Casado expected to depart in the summer, Tommy is being seen as a replacement and is a strong contender for a first-team promotion.

What’s clear is that Flick’s renewal is expected to finalise after Barcelona lift the La Liga title and the manager remains committed to nurturing and promoting youngsters from the academy.
