The Minnesota Vikings are looking to have a strong season. Second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy is set to be the starter, but he’ll essentially be a rookie, having missed all of last season due to injury. For star wide receiver Justin Jefferson, the focus is on building McCarthy’s confidence — especially since their lockers are side by side.

“Our lockers are right next to each other, so every chance that I get to talk to him about football, about anything that goes on outside of football. Just try to get to know him as much as I can because when the season comes and whenever we're locked in, I want him to be just as confident as I am of him to make the plays out there,” Jefferson said.

McCarthy has shown flashes during training camp, but he’s also had his struggles. According to The Athletic's Dianna Russini, he may fall short of fans’ expectations.

“Do I think J.J. McCarthy is wowing everyone at training camp? No, I don’t… [Vikings fans] are going to be disappointed,” Russini said on The Herd.

To make matters more complicated, wide receiver Jordan Addison was suspended for three games on Tuesday, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“NFL suspended Vikings WR Jordan Addison for the first three games of the 2025 regular season for violating the league’s Substances of Abuse Policy. Addison now will miss games at Chicago, vs. the Falcons and vs. the Bengals,” Schefter posted.

With Jefferson currently sidelined and Addison out to start the season, the Vikings are being urged to add help at wide receiver.

“The Vikings should seriously consider trading for a playable WR. You’re gonna be without Addison for 3 games, Jefferson is currently sidelined, and your depth behind those 2 is crazy shaky — Nailor has been stone-handed all camp, and you can’t hang your hat on anyone else,” NFL draft analyst Thor Nystrom wrote.

The Vikings lack proven depth behind their top targets, and with one definitely out, another injured, and the rest struggling with consistency, the outlook isn’t promising. Jefferson’s injury is a hamstring — an issue that can easily linger. The safe move would be to acquire a wide receiver before the season begins.
