We are just a handful of weeks away from the start of the Mississippi high school football season and there’s a bundle of games that fans should head out to this 2025 campaign.
When it comes to producing football talent, Mississippi is not far behind its counterparts in the Southeast in that department. The state also features some of the better football programs overall that will be going head-to-head. Which games should fans keep their eyes out for, though?
Check out our list of the Top 10 high school football games in Mississippi for the 2025 season.
I mean, is there really another game that can hold a fire to this? when it comes to Mississippi high school football championship-winning programs and talent galore in the state, you immediately think of Tupelo and Brandon. Both the Golden Wave and Bulldogs have played to some classics in recent memory, with this year shaping up to be no different. The two successful programs have split their last four meetings dating back to the 2016 season. Oh yeah, these two teams met in the MHSAA’s Class 6A title game last year, with Tupelo winning it all so Brandon coaches, players have that sitting in the back of their minds.
2. Houston (Tenn.) at Tupelo, Sept. 12
Just a couple of weeks after the Golden Wave clash with the Bulldogs, they play host to one of Tennessee’s better football programs in the Houston Mustangs of Germantown. This isn’t just some flash in the pan matchup as both team squared off last season, with Tupelo coming away with the 35-13 victory. Could we see another dominating win for the Golden Wave or will it be a bit more competitive this time around?
3. Clinton at Brandon, Sept. 12
The state’s top ranked Brandon Bulldogs had their hands full with the Clinton Arrows in 2024, in a game that produced 127 points and well north of 1,000 yards of offense. Is that not reason enough to hop in the car and watch this game? With the Bulldogs returning an impressive array of talent on offense, including 2027 running back Tyson Robinson, we think the chances of this one being another offensive shootout are pretty high.
4. Louisville at Starkville, Sept. 19
Speaking of offensive shootouts, both the Wildcats and Yellowjackets played to one in last year’s meeting, which totaled 83 points in all as Louisville came away with the win. Louisville stuck to the ground game and nearly rushed for 400 yards on the ground, but now the Wildcats have to travel over to Starkville. If anything else, this matchup between these two Mississippi high school football powers shouldn’t leave you disappointed when it comes to scoring.
5. Brandon at Madison Central, Sept. 5
Just looking at how tight, well played this game was last season, with Sam Williams off to Alabama to coach high school football, this one could get a little tighter in Week 2. Especially if Brandon loses to Tupelo in the regular season opener. Madison Central only trailed 14-0 at intermission and their defense did a fine job of slowing down Brandon’s offensive attack. Now, can they score some points this time around is the real question.
6. West Point at Noxubee County, Sept. 12
Anytime these two Mississippi high school football teams pair up, it brings for excitement. Last year the Green Wave were able to just narrowly edge out the Tigers in a 20-18 duel and the year before that, West Point won in a 50-40 shootout. Adding this game to the list is a no brainer as it brings together a couple of the state’s top teams along with history to back up that it should be quite the showdown.
7. Starkville at Brandon, Sept. 26
Folks looking up and down our list of games from the Magnolia State are now seeing Brandon on here for a fourth time, but for good reason. The Bulldogs squaring off against the Starkville Yellowjackets has the makings to be one of the state’s top games at the midway point of the season. The last time these two Mississippi high school football programs squared off was in 2022 when Starkville defeated Brandon, 48-32, for the Class 6A state championship.
8. West Point at Louisville, Aug. 29
Kicking off the season down in Mississippi will obviously have a lot of eyes on the top game on our list, but we add this one because it has the potential to being just as good. The 2024 Class 5A finalists opened up last season against Louisville at home and lost, 15-14. Now the Green Wave have to travel over to the Wildcats and we can see another defensive showdown between the two programs.
9. Oak Grove at Hattiesburg, Sept. 12
A 20-point fourth quarter between Oak Grove and Hattiesburg nearly made the 2024 edition an overtime game. Now with the two programs meeting up in Week 3, revisiting this contest seems like a safe bet to being one of the better games of the Mississippi high school football season. Hattiesburg barely got by a determined Oak Grove team, with the former winning 27-21. Could we see another down-to-the-wire meeting?
10. Grenada at South Panola, Oct. 24
To cap the 2024 season, Grenada and South Panola gave folks one of the best Mississippi high school football games of the season. Grenada ended up winning last year’s affair, 21-13, and seeing that the Chargers will travel to the Tigers this fall makes for an interesting rematch.
