American tennis star Ben Shelton can officially call himself a champion.
Coming into Thursday night, Shelton was a bit anxious to get his first first ATP Masters final underway. He defeated fellow American and world No. 4 Taylor Fritz in the semifinal to set up a showdown with Karen Khachanov.
"The Masters were the one level of tournaments that I’ve been struggling with, and my next step is being able to excel in these tournaments," Shelton said. "So taking that first step and getting my first deep run under my belt is exciting."
Shelton, 22, defeated Khachanov on Thursday night to win the Canadian Open final and claim his first ATP Masters 1000 title. He needed a third set tiebreak to get the job done.
While there's no question Shelton's serve helped him get to the finish line, his return was equally impressive at times.
As soon as Shelton secured the win in Toronto, fans rushed over to social media to congratulate him.
"Ben Shelton is the champion of the Toronto Masters. Biggest title of his career. I’m so unbelievably proud of him right now, you don’t even understand. He is here," one fan wrote on X.
"Ben Shelton was incredible all week. Undoubtedly the deserved winner of this title. Karen Khachanov is one of the better dudes on tour. Always gracious in victory and defeat," a second fan said.
"Ben's forehand is a rocket. Credit to Khachanov for a fantastic game of tennis. But the best American man on tour wins his first Masters title. Congratulations, Ben Shelton," another fan said.
"Impressive win Ben Shelton. Probably best match I seen him play maybe ever cuz idk when I can really recall another time he played well like that. Movement an defense."
With the win, Shelton became the youngest American man to win a Masters title since Andy Roddick in 2004.
Next up for Shelton is the US Open. He has already made the semifinal in Queens. Maybe, just maybe, he'll make it to the final this year.
