Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has lauded centre back Harry Maguire with praise over his recent performances.

Down and out

The England international’s career at Old Trafford looked over only two summers ago.

After barely featuring in the 2022/2023 season, he was stripped of the captaincy and almost left the club for West Ham United.

Nonetheless, he has fought back and played a much more significant role in the last two seasons, playing 40 games in total last season and scoring four goals.

Redemption

It has recently been reported that the 32-year-old is one of head coach Ruben Amorim’s leaders in the dressing room, after regaining his status at the club.

What’s more, Maguire is understood to have rejected the advances of numerous teams and United are thought to be willing to offer the player a new deal which would see him retire at Old Trafford.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand has also commented on the player’s remarkable return to form in recent months.

Risen from the dead

Speaking on his Rio Presents podcast he revealed that he had had conversations with the defender in the past.

He asserted, “I ain’t got that bad energy for players or for the club, I want them to do well. But if they don’t play well, I’m gonna say what I see, and I had that discussion with Harry Maguire.”

Ferdinand added that “we had the tough questions like that, what’s it like you having criticism?”

Nonetheless, the Premier League winner praised Maguire’s ability to recover from such challenging circumstances.

He claimed, “someone who risen from the dead almost, shown character. He was down and out, but he’s come back. So to show that character and resilience, it was nice to just get beneath the skin and talk with him about it.”
