The 2025 high school football season officially kicks off today with high schools across Hawaii playing a full slate of games between Friday and Saturday. There are 15 games on the weekend docket, with the biggest matchup being between St. Louis and Kahuku on Saturday.

No. 3 St. Louis at No. 1 Kahuku

When: Saturday, 11 p.m. CT

When it comes to Hawaii high school football, there’s really no better matchup than this. The Red Raiders and Crusaders are ranked Nos. 1 and 3 respectively in the Rivals Hawaii High School Composite Rankings and this game, unsurprisingly, is a rematch of last year’s Hawaii HHSAA Division I-OPEN state championship game. Kahuku defeated St. Louis, 14-13, in last year’s season opener but the Crusaders won the rematch 17-10 for the state title. The scene now shifts over to Kahuku’s home venue and the Red Raiders assuredly have revenge on their minds.

Massey Prediction: Kahuku 28, St. Louis 14

No. 5 Punahou at No. 6 Kapolei

When: Saturday, 11:30 p.m. CT

The last time these two teams went head-to-head was five six years ago when Punahou rolled to a dominating 44-13 victory over Kapolei. Now fast forward to the present and the Hurricanes and Buff ‘n Blue clash once again as both enter the season with aspirations of competing for a state championship. If history says anything for Punahou, winning season openers doesn’t exactly set the tone for how the season is going to go. Last year, the Buff ‘n Blue upended Konawaena and then proceeded to lose four-straight afterwards. Watch out for 2028 quarterback Hunter Fujikawa, who enters the season as one of the state’s top passers.

Massey Prediction: Punahou 30, Kapolei 21
