Leakesville (Miss.) Greene County wide receiver Jase Mathews has made his decision.

The four-star pass catcher and No. 17 prospect in the Rivals300 has committed to Auburn over LSU and Texas A&M on Saturday, giving Hugh Freeze and the Tigers a major SEC win on the recruiting trail.

“War Eagle! I have committed to Auburn,” Mathews told Rivals.

Mathews has been a regular visitor to the Plains — four visits total — and each trip only strengthened the connection. From the moment Auburn offered him last fall, the Tigers became a serious contender. By the end of his recruitment, the Plains felt like home.

“I feel comfortable every time I’m on campus. I never feel homesick. It feels like it’s right next door. It is all about the people. They make me feel so comfortable.”

Mathews breaks down why Auburn won out

For Mathews, the decision came down to fit.

“Auburn is just a place I want to be,” he said. “I feel like I can thrive there in all areas of life—mentally, physically, and spiritually. The coaches made me feel like I was already part of the team. It is just right when I am there.”

Mathews highlighted his relationship with several Auburn coaches, including wide receivers coach Marcus Davis, coach Freeze and a long list of staffers as a key to his commitment.

“Coach Davis is a young coach, and we’ve built a really close connection — not even just about football. I’ve met his family. He’s a reasonable, understanding guy who I know can help me grow on and off the field. He is a coach I fully trust.

“Coach Freeze is one of the few head coaches who personally recruited me. We’ve had a lot of conversations. He’s laid-back and real. That relationship built up over time to a really strong one.”

Mathews was hosted on his official visit by 2025 Auburn quarterback signee Deuce Knight, and that time on campus only helped the Tigers.

“Deuce showed me around, gave me the nuts and bolts of everything,” Mathews added. “He didn’t push me or anything, but he would reach out, he would recruit me and it was great. He told me some good things about the school and the coaches.”

Mathews made a difficult decision, but he feels it is the right one

Choosing Auburn wasn’t easy.

“It was very tough,” Mathews admitted. “There wasn’t a single flaw in any of the schools on my list. But I sat down with my mom the last couple of weeks, prayed on it, thought about it, and just felt like this is where God wants me.”

Mathews is confident in what’s being built at Auburn — and he’s ready to be a part of it.

“They’re building something big there. I want to be a part of it. I want to help them win games. Auburn has great fans, it is an environment I want to play in and big things are coming.”
