After a tough game, work productivity drops, and it’s costing millions in Georgia. See what this study says.
If you're a diehard sports fan, this might sound familiar: after a defeat, your next workday feels unproductive.
A new study by PromoGuy confirms it's not just in your head. Here's what the study revealed.
How much productivity Georgia fans lose after big games
According to the report, 35% of employed Georgia sports fans say they’re less productive at work after a major team loss, averaging 1.7 hours of lost time on the job.
That may not seem like much, but it adds up fast. Each Georgia worker loses about $59 worth of productivity after a big defeat, resulting in a statewide cost of more than $94 million.
How Georgia compares to other states
Georgia isn’t alone in post-game slumps. Nationally, 38% of working fans report being less productive the day after a major loss.
California topped the list for the biggest dips in productivity, with fans there losing an average of 4.3 hours, nearly triple Georgia’s total.
Methodology
PromoGuy surveyed 2,000 U.S.-based sports fans with paid jobs between July 15–17, 2025. Participants reported whether they felt less productive after a major team loss and estimated how many hours they lost.
Researchers then used labor force participation rates and average hourly wages from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to estimate lost income per person and total losses by state.
The share of sports fans per state was based on a June 2025 IPSOS study showing that 67% of Americans identify as sports fans.
