Ohio State has added former NFL defensive coordinator Josh Boyer in off-field role. Ryan Day continues to add NFL experience to his staff.
COLUMBUS – Ohio State head coach Ryan Day has added more NFL experience to his coaching staff.
The Buckeyes are adding former Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator and longtime NFL assistant coach Josh Boyer in an off-field role, sources confirm to Lettermen Row. ESPN’s Pete Thamel first reported the news.
Boyer was the defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins from 2020-22. Prior to that he served as the Dolphins defensive pass game coordinator & cornerbacks coach in 2019.
The majority of Boyer’s coaching career has been spent with the New England Patriots, however. He joined the Patriots in 2006 as a defensive assistant. He stayed in that role for three seasons before being promoted to defensive backs coach in 2009. Boyer then served as the Patiorts cornerbacks coach from 2012-2018.
During his time in Foxborough, Boyer worked closely with current Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. Both were with the Patriots from 2006-2017 before Patricia left to become the head coach of the Detroit Lions.
Boyer is a native of Heath, Ohio. He played college football at Muskingum University. Boyer then served as a graduate assistant at King’s College in 2000 before taking a similar role at Dayton in 2001. He was also a graduate assistant at Kent State from 2002-2003. His first full-time coaching job was as the defensive backs coach at Bryant in 2004. Boyer then spent one season as the defensive coordinator at South Dakota School of Mines in 2005 before heading to the NFL.
