Already playing without injured star Caitlin Clark, the Indiana Fever got off to a rough start against the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday night.

Down 26-14 with 44.6 seconds left in the first quarter, veteran Fever guard Sydney Colson went down with a non-contact injury right in front of the Indiana bench. She was ruled out for the rest of the game, and the Fever went on to lose 95-60.

Sydney Colson Injury Update

"Sydney Colson suffered a left leg injury during the first quarter of the Fever's game against Phoenix on Thursday night," the Fever said in an in-game statement to the media. "She is out for the remainder of the game."

After the game, Indiana head coach Stephanie White was unable to share any significant details on Colson.

"We'll get more evaluation when we get home tomorrow then we'll see where we are," White said.

What Happened to Sydney Colson?

The entire Fever team and coaching staff huddled around Colson to give her privacy while she was looked at by the medical staff. She was then helped back to the locker room and did not return to the game in the first half.

The cameras caught a slow-motion replay of the incident, in which she appeared to injure her left leg.

Colson, who just celebrated her 36th birthday, is averaging 2.4 points, 0.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists this season.

The 11-year WNBA veteran won two championships with the Las Vegas Aces as a reserve. She signed a one-year, $90,000 deal with Indiana in the offseason to add experience and depth behind Clark.

Fever's Injuries Piling Up at Critical Time

As the backup point guard, her role has increased in Clark's absence. Despite Aari McDonald claiming the starting spot recently, Colson has already started six games this year — the most of any season in her WNBA career.

Clark has only played 13 regular-season games this WNBA season, and there is still no timetable available for her return from a right groin injury.

McDonald also ended up heading to the locker room during the game, with White confirming postgame that she sustained a right foot injury of unknown severity.

Sophie Cunningham, who put up a season-high 18 points in the loss, picked up a minor left ankle injury that she played through in the second half.

With the fifth-placed Fever in the middle of the heated WNBA playoff race, the injuries in the Mercury game hold extra weight.

They have been trying to take a long-term approach to Clark's return instead of rushing her back, but depending on the severity of the injuries in the backcourt, they may have no other option but to bring her back sooner than they thought.

The team will regroup and wait for updates on Friday before a national television matchup against the Chicago Sky at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday on CBS.
