After winning five straight games without Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell and the Indiana Fever now find themselves on a two-game drought after falling to Alyssa Thomas and the Phoenix Mercury 95-60 on Thursday night.

Mitchell struggled in the final game of the Fever's road trip, tallying 12 points on 4-of-17 shooting and four assists. Sophie Cunningham seemed to be the only Indiana player to show up, recording a team-high 18 points against her former team.

While the Fever were handed their 14th loss of the season, Mitchell may have suffered more as a fine is likely coming her way.

Kelsey Mitchell Picks Up Technical Foul

With just over three seconds left in the third quarter, Mitchell drew a foul on the Mercury’s Monique Akoa Makani while going up for a shot. Mitchell landed awkwardly, prompting officials to review the play further.

After reviewing the replay, officials upheld Akoa Makani’s foul as a personal. They also assessed Mitchell a technical, giving the Mercury a free throw and possession. Mitchell took her two free throws from the shooting foul as well, making one.

"Kelsey Mitchell gets called for a technical foul (after they were reviewing Monique Akoa Makani for a hostile act), and Akoa Makani's foul stays as a common foul," Indy Star's Chloe Peterson wrote on X. "DB takes the technical foul shot, and Mitchell gets her two shots."

Kelsey Mitchell Will Likely Be Fined

Barring the league reversing the technical foul call, Mitchell has a $200 fine coming her way. In the WNBA, players receive the following fines for technical fouls:

  • Technical fouls 1-3: $200 fine each
  • Technical fouls 4-6: $400 fine each
  • Technical fouls 7+: $800 fine each

Last season, a WNBA player's seventh tech and every other tech afterwards (9, 11, 13, etc...) resulted in a one-game suspension. But, due to the WNBA moving to a 44-game schedule, the league has increased the suspesnion number to eight technical fouls (10, 12, 14, etc...)

Up next for the Fever, a trip back home to face the Chicago Sky for the fourth time this year on Saturday.
