The Los Angeles Angels are once again staring down a familiar reality: another season slipping away, another year of Mike Trout's prime wasted.
While the three-time MVP remains one of baseball's most respected stars, the Angels continue to flounder. Trout has been the face of the franchise for over a decade, loyal through losing seasons, roster resets and managerial changes.
Unfortunately for Trout, time isn't on his side, and with injuries limiting his availability in recent years, the window to chase a championship is narrowing. Which is why one of his former teammates believes it's time to make a change, for Trout's sake.
Speaking on Foul Territory, former Angels outfielder Cameron Maybin said what many fans and listeners have been thinking. If the Angels aren't going to win, they should at least allow Trout to do so elsewhere.
"I think that Angels fans would even agree," Maybin said. "It's time to let him go win somewhere else."
It's a bold suggestion, but not an outlandish one. Trout has appeared in one postseason series in his 14-year career, a 2014 sweep at the hands of the Kansas City Royals. Despite a 12-year, $426.5 million extension in 2019, his loyalty has been tested by year after year of underachievement.
Maybin, who played with Trout in 2017, made it clear. Trading him wouldn't be about giving up. It would be about doing right by a generational player.
"Give the guy a chance, man. Reward him for his loyalty, how about that? Get him somewhere where he has a chance to win. I mean, at this point, he's still special. Get something for him now and allow him to go win. He deserves it."
