Some nights at the ballpark feel like a fight. On Friday in the Bronx, New York Yankees pitcher Devin Williams got hit hard, and it stung.
The $8.6 million reliever watched the Houston Astros tag him for three runs in the 10th inning of a 5-3 loss. Carlos Correa broke the tie with a sharp single.
Taylor Trammell followed with a two-run shot to right. Williams' confidence appears to have taken a blow despite his resume as a two-time All-Star.
“I’m not making pitches,” Williams told reporters, per The Athletic's Chris Kirschner. “It’s pretty simple. I stink right now.”

Yankees Manager Aaron Boone Still Backs the Struggling Closer
It’s been a tough stretch as Williams has blown two saves and taken two losses in his last four outings. Williams has given up at least one run in five straight games since July 29 and allowed four homers in his last eight outings.
“I really haven’t struggled like this since probably 2018,” Williams said, recalling his Tommy John comeback season. “All I did then was continue to work and try to help the team any way I can.”

Despite the struggles, Aaron Boone isn’t bailing on the pitcher. The Yankees manager said he will keep finding “good spots” for Williams to regain form.
Boone pointed out his bullpen options were thin Friday, with David Bednar and Mark Leiter Jr. recently overworked.
The Yankees Had No Answer for Astros Star Jose Altuve
The 10th inning unraveled quickly for the Yankees. Astros slugger Jose Altuve advanced to third on a wild first pitch.
Correa cashed him in with a liner to center. Two batters later, Trammell launched an 0-1 changeup into the right-field seats.
Williams now owns a 3-5 record and has surrendered 28 earned runs this year, two more than in his last three seasons combined.
Heading into Saturday's contest, the Yankees have lost six of seven and dropped to 3-8 in extra innings. Williams, acquired from Milwaukee in Dec., knows the clock is ticking.
