Jacksonville Jaguars camp observations: Trevor Lawrence has inconsistent day, throws fifth pick

The Jacksonville Jaguars returned to practice on Aug. 11 after a day off and had an inconsistent day on offense.

It was an odd sight at the beginning of the team periods during the Jacksonville Jaguars training camp practice on Aug. 11 at the Miller Electric Center.

The team lined up for a total of 40 plays in 25 minutes, called a play, lined up, and snapped the ball. Referees then blew the plays dead almost immediately and the process repeated itself.

Jaguars coach Liam Coen said it was in response to the first preseason game on Aug. 9 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, when the team had eight penalties and several dropped passes on offense in a 31-25 loss.

"Alignment, assignment ... getting our cleats in the ground when we have a call ... on both sides of the ball," Coen said after practice. "Just getting the call, getting our cleats in the ground, making loud, guttural communications, getting the calls in quickly. That was what we were really trying to focus on."

Coen said the offensive mistakes, some of which occurred again during the practice, couldn't continue if the team wanted to improve on last year's 4-13 record.

"Ultimately, we're not playing the game as coaches, " he said. "We can only say so much. At some point, the players have to take the ownership of being out there. Until we kind of don't beat ourselves, we're probably not going to consistently beat anybody."
