The Detroit Lions are still trying to figure out who their backup quarterback will be for the 2025 NFL season, and it seems like we finally have some clarity regarding the competition based on Friday's preseason contest versus the Atlanta Falcons.

Kyle Allen completely outplayed Hendon Hooker in Atlanta on Friday. Allen completed seven of his eight passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns. The veteran signal-caller led Detroit on three scoring drives and played a near-flawless game, though he did fumble once, which he was able to recover.

During a press conference on Monday, Campbell praised Allen for his play and said the 29-year-old signal-caller was on point.

"I thought he was on point with the checks...he operated the offense at a high level. I was fired up," Campbell said of Allen's performance against the Falcons via Kory Woods of MLive.com.

Allen's exceptional play on Friday isn't the only reason why he is the clear leader in the QB2 battle right now.

Hooker's struggles from the Hall of Fame game continued in preseason Week 1, as the Tennessee product lost two fumbles and posted just 38 passing yards on seven completions. Campbell revealed that he benched Hooker for Allen in the second quarter due to the fumbles.

"You decide you're gonna be a runner, you gotta tuck it away, man," Campbell on Hooker's fumbling issues versus the Falcons via Colton Pouncy of The Athletic.

It's clear that Allen has the edge over Hooker heading into this week's preseason contest versus the Miami Dolphins. If Allen continues to stack solid outings, Detroit will likely pick him over Hooker as No.2 quarterback behind Jared Goff due to his experience, as he has started 19 games in his career thus far.
