Former Alabama quarterback transfer Dylan Lonergan was named the starting quarterback for Boston College ahead of the 2025 season.
Lonergan was the third-string backup in Tuscaloosa for two years before he decided to transfer to BC.
He has often been praised for his strong arm, which was on display several times throughout his career in Tuscaloosa when he came in for mop-up duty.
Lonergan reunited with his former offensive coordinator at Bama, Bill O’Brie,n who is now the head coach of BC.
Lonergan left the program when the Tide signed five-star QB Keelon Russell and when Washington QB Austin Mack transferred into the program, leaving Lonergan as the odd man out.
Coming out of high school, he was a four-star quarterback from Georgia. Had Lonergan stayed in Tuscaloosa, he might have battled Ty Simpson for the starting position.
But reports are that he no longer wanted to compete with Simpson for the starting position, so he decided to transfer, and it has paid off for him.
Lonergan obviously wanted to go to a school where he had a shot of winning the starting position, and when former Eagles quarterback Thomas Castellanos decided to transfer to Florida State, it became the perfect situation for the talented Lonergan.
He gets to be reunited with his former college coach at a school that desperately needed a starting quarterback, and he gets to start over. It was a win/win situation for both parties involved.
But you do have to wonder, had he stayed in Tuscaloosa, would he have been given a shot to compete for the starting position?
