Dylan Lonergan (9) leads the QB stretch line in camp (8/12/25 By Kevin Stone)

Just a boring Tuesday morning in Chestnut Hill.

So, I was sitting in Rte. 9 traffic around 8:30 when the flood of texts started streaming in with wise-cracking friends and co-workers asking why I didn’t have the breaking news about Dylan Lonergan being named the starting quarterback. Quickly went to X (at a red light, obviously) and sure enough, there it was.

There’s several things that go into that answer, but I’ll leave it at the fact that throughout the first couple weeks of camp, it legitimately felt like an even race between Lonergan and Grayson James. But, it’s now official, as O’Brien confirmed after practice and Lonergan was indeed working with the starters throughout another productive session, officially the 10th of the summer.

As usual, here’s the full run down from practice:

Quick early observation

Got there right as the fight song started blaring and stretch began. O’Brien said the quarterbacks were told in the morning and Lonergan was in fact leading the QB stretch line (by the way I accidentally got the Boston skyline in the background of that Lonergan picture and it might end up being an epic shot if he leads them to a special season).

Team red zone

After the usual stretch and indy/walkthrough routine, the Eagles jumped right into the good stuff.

Lonergan: Interception for Amari Jackson on a jump ball/fade in the right corner (the irony wasn’t lost on anyone), incomplete back right corner for Lewis Bond, short hitch TD to Jaedn Skeete, TD in the back of the end zone to Bond

James: Incomplete back left corner, TD to Kaelan Chudzinski, incomplete diving attempt to Ismael Zamor, great toe-tap TD catch along the back line for Chudzinski

Regular team period

Lonergan: Hard run by Jordan McDonald, short pass to Jeremiah Franklin, short run by McDonald, incompletion

James: Out to Zamor, hard run by Alex Broome, deep crosser to Luke McLaughlin, Griffin Collins (who continues to show up and make plays daily) run stuff

Lonergan: Short pass to Zeke Moore, (missed the next snap)

James: Sideline completion to Brady Clough, strong push up the middle from Chuck Naaeto stops a run (another guy who is coming on strong lately)

Field goals

Still not great. Arguably the only true concern on the team right now. Luca Lombardo, Liam Connor and Sam Stone continue to battle it out and started off well (I had them each 2-2 early) but it slowly faded. End of game situations wasn’t pretty either. O’Brien bluntly said he didn’t like the place kicking at all after practice. TBD on where this goes…

Team period

Lonergan: Incomplete to Bond outside (in front), incompletion deep to Skeete (double coverage), crosser to Skeete, incompletion over the middle

James: Handles a bad snap and gets a quick throw off to McLaughlin for positive yards, drop by McLaughlin on a crosser, out to Datrell Jones (I think), throw in the flat to Broome

Arjona: Out to Chudzinski, out to Stevie Amar Jr., run stuff by Sterling Sanders, incompletion high to Jones

Punt

On the flip side of special teams, punting was arguably the most encouraging its been all camp. Both Andy Quinn and Shamus Florio appeared to make good contact and did what coaches wanted them to do. Most importantly, there were no shanks. As for returners, as I’ve said there’s a bunch of guys who could get a chance, but would love to see the job go to VJ Wilkins who has started to get more involved in practice after dealing with an early injury heading into camp

Team (coming out of their own end)

Lonergan: Beautifully thrown deep ball down the right sideline to a wide open Wilkins but he drops it, hitch to Franklin, out to McDonald, ‘sack’ by Kwan Williams, outside run for Turbo Richard, short gain for Bond, patient run by Turbo, run stuff by Naaeto in the backfield, out to Skeete, hard run by Turbo (met just as hard in the hole by Omarion Davis), sack by Edwin Kolenge (“complete” to Ty Lockwood for practice purposes), out to Turbo, hard run by Turbo, short TD to Lockwood

James: Sack by Favor Bate, crosser to Zamor, out to Chudzinski, completion to Zamor, short catch by Chudzinski, PBU for Marcelous Townsend on a deep ball vs. Wilkins, incomplete outside (pressure from Onye Nwosisi

Arjona: Out to Amar Jr. for a chunk gain, short pass to Amar Jr., hard run by Mekhi Dodd, deep(ish) angle to Dodd down to about the five-yard line, short run by Dodd, incomplete slant, TD to Chudzinski in the right side of the end zone

Situational work to end the day

Ball at the 50, no time outs, field goal wins it, 15 seconds remaining…

Lonergan: Incompletion high

James: Incomplete crosser

Ball at the 30, 1 TO each, FG wins it, 20 seconds left…

Lonergan: Quintayvious Hutchins strip sack

James: Incomplete deep out, crosser to McLaughlin and he gets out of bounds with 10 seconds left, James sneak/centering of the ball and timeout, Lombardo field goal no good

Ball at the 38, 1 timeout each, 6 seconds left, field goal wins it…

Lonergan: Slant in traffic to Bond and timeout, missed FG by Liam Connor

James: Short hitch to Clough and timeout, missed field goal Lombardo

Ball at the 40, 10 seconds left, no timeouts, need a touchdown…

Lonergan: Incompletion, PBU in the end zone on a Hail Mary

James: Quick out to Zamor (ruled in bounds), clock with four seconds left, PBU in the end zone on a Hail Mary

The Eagles hit the sideline for conditioning after that as Day 10 officially concluded. BC is back at it for two straight days Wednesday and Thursday in the heat before another important scrimmage on Saturday inside Alumni.
