Michigan continued to fill out its recruiting and personnel staff this week, hiring Nick Welsh as the program’s newest recruiting analyst. This will be Welsh’s first Power Four job after previously working for Charlotte and Tennessee Tech.

The Wolverines’ newest hire graduated college just a matter of months ago and has quickly climbed the recruiting industry ladder to land his job at U-M. Michigan keeps a strong group of analysts on staff at all times, with most of them working with specific position coaches.

Welsh started his first postgraduate job in June, working as the defensive player personnel coordinator for Tennessee Tech before departing for Ann Arbor. Prior to that move, he took on a player personnel and recruiting analyst role with Charlotte.

He took on a wide variety of roles with the 49ers, including creating and maintaining the staff’s recruiting boards, assisting with on-campus recruiting events and scouting potential prep, junior college and transfer portal prospects. Welsh graduated from the university with a Bachelor’s degree in Health Systems Management.

During his four years on staff, Charlotte finished with one Top 10 class in Conference USA and another in the American Athletic Conference. His time at the program overlapped with Michigan associate head coach Biff Poggi, who rejoined the program early this year after leading the 49ers for two seasons.

Welsh’s hiring helps fill a gap on the staff left by Michigan’s promotion of Richard Perry to assistant director of recruiting. The Wolverines have a pretty established history of developing its recruiting department from within, and these analyst jobs are often one of the first steps. Perry worked with wide receivers coach Ron Bellamy. It remains unclear which position group Welsh will assist.

Michigan’s 2026 recruiting class ranks No. 11 nationally and No. 4 in the Big Ten.
