Quinn Ewers in Big Trouble With Dolphins After First Start, NFL Writer Hints

The Miami Dolphins tied the Chicago Bears 24-24 on Sunday, a game that saw the 'Fins use Tua Tagovailoa, Quinn Ewers and Zach Wilson against a Bears QB contingent that included Tyson Bagent, Case Keenum and Austin Reed. The play of Ewers, a former University of Texas standout and Heisman Trophy contender, was the talk of football fans nationwide as they discussed just how far the former Longhorns signal caller appears to have fallen since the start of last season.

While Ewers boasts plenty of talent and time to turn things around, one SI writer believes that he is not close to appearing a regular season game anytime soon.

"Quinn Ewers isn't anywhere near ready to play an NFL regular season game," SI reporter Alain Poupart wrote in an article after Sunday's game after Ewers went five-for-18 passing for 91 yards.

"Yeah, it didn't look very good for Ewers, whose first five passes fell incomplete, who fumbled when sacked from behind as he held the ball away from his body, and who missed a wide open - and I mean wide open - Pharoah Brown behind Alexander Mattison on the completion to Mattison where he got injured," Poupart continued.

Poupart added one caveat.

"But this was his first NFL game and any premature evaluation here would be counterproductive," he added.

The Ewers comments were categorized as an "overreaction" based on the title of the SI writer's column, but didn't do much to minimize the feeling that the Dolphins have a major project on their hands in Ewers, who came into college as a five-star prospect but left without a national title to his name.

The comments on Ewers came as coach Mike McDaniel offered advice for both Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson of the Bears.

Meanwhile, Arch Manning caught a few strays following the debut of his former UT teammate.

The NFL's QB musical chairs race is still in the process of sorting things out. Now, it will be up to Ewers to learn from his coaches and teammates in hopes of becoming the player everyone envisioned he become would a few years ago.
